Mindful Sexuality: Yoga and Meditation Practices for Sexual Wellness with Julie Peters

Our sexual selves are not always honored in our spiritual traditions. Erotic energy has been feared, avoided, or sometimes used to cause harm to others. Many of us have lost touch with our sexual energy because of stress, life pressures, or direct sexual trauma. That erotic energy, however, is a natural and healthy aspect of our spiritual selves. It is the energy of vitality that draws us toward pleasure, joy, connection, and meaning in our lives. It encourages us to take risks, to try new things, to stretch and grow and evolve as powerful human beings in our own right. Erotic energy isn’t just about sex, it’s about the way we engage with our own bodies, our intimate others, and the community at large. In this evening workshop, we will discuss the spiritual side of erotic energy from the perspective of feminist cultural critic Audre Lorde as well as from the Shakta Tantra tradition, which is filled with goddesses whose sexual energy is partly what makes them powerful. We will practice yoga and mindfulness techniques that give us tools to gently heal our own relationship with our sexuality in a trauma-informed way. This workshop will include some meditation, a flow-style yoga practice, optional journaling, and discussion. It is for all genders. There will be no nudity, no explicit material, and no processing of specific traumatic experiences in this workshop.
